Backlash Over New JFK Jr. Series

The producer of a newly released series focusing on the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy has addressed the criticisms coming from the Kennedy family.

FX’s nine-part series, titled “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette,” made its debut on Hulu last Thursday. The show chronicles the relationship of JFK Jr. and Bessette, starting from their initial romance through to their tragic deaths in 1999.

Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, has openly criticized the series, describing it as a “grotesque” exploitation of his uncle’s legacy. He expressed his thoughts in an Instagram video, stating, “Just to be clear, I think the praise for Uncle John is great. What I don’t think is great is profiting in grotesque ways.”

Schlossberg also mentioned that the family wasn’t consulted before the show was produced. He noted, “The right to privacy, including the ability to control one’s name, image and likeness, does not survive death in New York state… he’s considered a public figure, so there’s not much we can do.”

In response, Brad Simpson, the executive producer of the series, defended it as being a genuine portrayal of JFK Jr.’s life. He expressed a desire for viewers to perceive the series as a heartfelt tribute, saying, “My hope is that people watch this show and see our sincerity. They see that we’re doing this with love and that we were trying to celebrate the lives of Carolyn Bessette and JFK Jr.” He encouraged viewers to watch before forming an opinion, suggesting they might be surprised by its authenticity.

Actress Sarah Pidgeon, who portrays Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, also weighed in, acknowledging that, while she doesn’t know the experience of having a show about her family, she respects Schlossberg’s feelings on the matter.
