8 Skiers Dead, 1 Unaccounted for After Avalanche in Lake Tahoe

Search Efforts Continue After Avalanche Near Lake Tahoe

Authorities announced Wednesday that the bodies of eight skiers who went missing in an avalanche near Lake Tahoe, California, have been recovered, while one person remains unaccounted for.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon provided updates during a news conference, indicating that the focus had shifted from rescue to recovery efforts. “They were actually making their way back to camp when the avalanche struck,” Moon said. “Finding the first few survivors took our search and rescue teams quite a while.”

The event marks one of the deadliest avalanches in the U.S. since 1981, when 11 climbers lost their lives on Mount Rainier in Washington.

Moon mentioned that six individuals had been located buried in the snow on Tuesday evening, describing the prevailing weather conditions as “extraordinary.” The skiers had reportedly spent three days traversing the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A significant winter storm had hit the West Coast, prompting teams to respond to the Castle Peak area following reports that 15 skiers were trapped.

Authorities faced challenges in carrying out the rescue operations due to the heavy snowfall and concerns about further avalanches.

Blackbird Mountain Guides reported that the group, which included four guides, was returning to the trailhead when the avalanche occurred. They expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the missing persons, their families, and the first responders on the scene,” and they confirmed assistance in the investigation.
