Several co-hosts of “The View” discussed New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent mistakes during the Munich Security Conference, deeming her performance somewhat embarrassing. Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent Democrat and potential presidential contender in 2028, faced backlash over various comments, including a moment of confusion regarding Venezuela and a lengthy pause—nearly 20 seconds—before saying the U.S. should try to steer clear of conflict with China over Taiwan.
Co-host Whoopi Goldberg played a clip showcasing Ocasio-Cortez’s faltering response, remarking that “the right caught her coming out of the gate a little timid.” The show featured clips from conservatives mocking her gaffes, especially her hesitation in addressing how many U.S. troops should be deployed to guard Taiwan against China, followed by a montage of President Donald Trump’s own blunders.
Joy Behar attempted to defend Ocasio-Cortez, suggesting her stammering sounded less effective but, redeeming that in comparison to Trump, she seemed more qualified. Guest host Savannah Chrisley, however, countered that a mispronunciation is distinctly different from failing to grasp essential geopolitical details, highlighting that how one recovers matters—Trump continued to engage while Ocasio-Cortez struggled in her response.
Sunny Hostin pointed out that while Ocasio-Cortez’s overall message critiquing rising authoritarianism was valid, her execution faltered, especially during her own attempt to pronounce “authoritarianism,” which gave her co-hosts a laugh. “I don’t think she handled this particular answer very well,” said co-host Sarah Haines, adding that discussions about Ukraine and Russia had been ongoing for years, stressing the importance of being informed in such conversations.
In the end, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that her performance wasn’t exactly shining but suggested that critics would have found fault regardless. Goldberg reminded viewers that everyone makes mistakes, saying, “As someone who’s stepped in a lot of poop over the years, this is just a little message—you stumble, it happens.” Behar later brought up Ocasio-Cortez confusing Iceland and Greenland, prompting Chrisley to note that Ocasio-Cortez had also incorrectly placed Venezuela on the equator.
“That was another gaffe,” Hostin stated, underscoring the seriousness of Ocasio-Cortez’s geographical mix-up. Goldberg concurred, emphasizing that nobody is perfect and how frustrating it is when people expect perfection from those in the spotlight.
