Georgia AG Investigates Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has initiated an investigation into the popular gaming platform Roblox due to worries that it’s not adequately protecting young users from predators and harmful content.
Carr, a Republican, revealed this week that he’s looking into whether Roblox has violated consumer protection laws in the state by allegedly putting millions of children and teenagers at risk of abuse and sexual exploitation. This probe is part of a broader look into online gaming and chatting platforms used by youth across the nation as virtual hangouts.
The announcement follows multiple reports of child abuse and sexual exploitation cases that are believed to have originated on Roblox. The investigation seeks to assess whether the company has effectively safeguarded its young users and adhered to Georgia’s consumer protection laws.
This investigation has emerged after a number of alarming incidents involving minors being approached through the platform. Earlier this year, Georgia State Patrol managed to rescue two missing girls from a home in Florida after it was discovered they had been communicating with a 19-year-old in Nebraska via Roblox before their disappearance. The individual now faces kidnapping charges, among others.
In another 2023 case, an adult user allegedly pretended to be a child on Roblox, utilizing the platform’s chat function to contact a 12-year-old boy and manipulate him into sharing explicit photos.
Carr discussed the investigation, reaffirming his dedication to protecting children from online dangers. He stated, “Predators are using online platforms like Roblox to target children, and we’re fighting back. As a father and attorney general, keeping children safe is always my top priority, and businesses that put children in harm’s way will be held accountable.”
The Attorney General’s office has requested various materials, including a detailed report on abuse and safety violations involving Georgia users and information on the effectiveness of parental controls. They are also interested in documents regarding chat and game moderation, as well as age verification processes for child users.
Carr has also asked for audits related to adult-child interactions on the platform, criminal activity reports, and marketing material that presents Roblox as suitable for kids.
In response, Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman noted in a statement that the company shares Carr’s commitment to child safety online. He highlighted that Roblox has implemented several leading-edge protections to monitor harmful content and block inappropriate exchanges in chats. Kaufman mentioned that by early 2026, they completed a global rollout of age estimation technology, making Roblox the first major platform to require age verification for all chat users. While Kaufman acknowledged that no system is perfect, he expressed a desire to cooperate with the Attorney General’s office to enhance child safety online.
Additionally, Breitbart News has reported extensively on lawsuits claiming that Roblox and similar platforms like Discord have failed to provide adequate protection for children against predators. One lawsuit from an Oklahoma mother argues that Roblox makes children “easy prey” for predators.
The complaint states that her son, at 12 years old, was targeted on Roblox by someone posing as another child who manipulated him into sharing explicit images and videos. The lawsuit argues that Roblox’s design makes children vulnerable to predatory behavior and claims the company prioritizes financial gain over child safety. They accuse Roblox of misleading parents by suggesting the platform is a safe space for children, seeking damages for the pain and suffering caused by the alleged abuse.
