Jake Tapper Expresses Discontent Over CNN’s New Book Promotion Policy
CNN anchor Jake Tapper is reportedly quite unhappy regarding the network’s recent changes in its book promotion policy. The update appears to come after significant promotion of Tapper’s own book, “Original Sin,” co-written with Axios reporter Alex Thompson.
The new policy outlines that CNN’s platform is meant to distribute journalism rather than individual sales. It specifies that, “Websites, QR codes, and links should not be used for personal sales… News and advertising must remain distinct, even if it’s related to a prominent CNN journalist.” There’s a specific guideline stating that CNN anchors can promote a book on the day of its publication only if it is part of a journalistic piece. However, they shouldn’t promote it during their own shows once it’s officially released.
Interestingly, one CNN staff member suggested that this new policy was instituted largely due to concerns regarding Tapper’s work. “I think this policy was made because of him,” the staffer commented.
“Original Sin,” which gained attention upon its release last May, dives into the behind-the-scenes dynamics of President Biden’s cognitive decline, particularly leading up to the 2024 election. Despite the buzz, both Tapper and CNN faced backlash for what some perceived as excessive coverage of the book. Notably, Jon Stewart, host of “The Daily Show,” criticized Tapper for continuously putting together his narrative until its release. He mentioned that, “I think most people saw what he was doing and thought it was nut butter,” reflecting a common sentiment among viewers.
A CNN journalist revealed that Tapper is “very unhappy” with this new direction and reportedly gathered colleagues to discuss the policy with CNN CEO Mark Thompson in order to express their dissent. The CNN spokesperson, however, opted not to comment on the matter.
