Trump Administration Challenges Minnesota over Women’s Sports Fairness

The Trump administration is taking legal action against Minnesota, claiming the state is not complying with Title IX requirements. This move, led by the Department of Justice, aims to uphold fairness in women’s sports. Kendall Kotzmacher, a college softball player, shared her challenging experiences competing against biological men, emphasizing the protection of the rights achieved by female athletes. Many young athletes, like Kendall, are rallying for changes to ensure a level playing field.

Separately, Smith College is under scrutiny as it faces a federal investigation for alleged violations of Title IX, following a complaint from the education watchdog group Defending Education. Nearly a year after the complaint was filed, the Trump administration’s investigation was announced.

According to a statement from the college, Smith allows “biological males” to access female-only spaces, such as dorms and athletic facilities. The Office for Civil Rights within the Trump administration is assessing whether these policies infringe on Title IX of the Education Reform Act of 1972.

Kimberly Ritchie, the assistant secretary for civil rights, noted that allowing biological males into women’s spaces undermines the essence of women’s colleges, raising concerns about privacy and equity under federal law.

Defending Education, a national grassroots organization, lodged its complaint back in June 2025, alleging Smith College violated Title IX by admitting transgender women while seemingly neglecting the treatment of biological females who identify as male.

Sarah Parshall Perry, a senior legal fellow at Defending Education, stated that admitting men who identify as women has transformed Smith, a historic women’s institution, into something no longer exclusively for women. She also pointed out that such policies compromise safety and privacy for women, rendering ‘all-female’ spaces ineffective.

The concerns extend beyond access issues. Critics argue that the college discriminates against female students by not allowing biological females who identify as male admission. Such practices are viewed as creating unequal treatment in the educational environment.

In light of these developments, the university’s commitment to providing gender-affirming care is notable. It has been reported that their wellness center offers support, including hormone therapy, to students of all gender identities.

Back in 2015, Smith College revised its admissions policy to include transgender women, a change that administrators justified as a reflection of evolving societal views on gender. They emphasized their ongoing mission to represent diverse women’s experiences.

Despite these shifts, Smith College maintains it will continue using gender-specific language in official communications. However, no statements have been made in response to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding this investigation.
