Sophie Cunningham misses the mark while criticizing LA

Randy Newman passionately sang, “I love L.A.,” with a hint of joy. But Sophie Cunningham is not on the same page.

This week, WNBA players took to TikTok to critique the city, describing it as a place filled with bland, disconnected, and uniform individuals. “People don’t dance, they don’t even say hello. There’s no personality,” Cunningham remarked after experiencing the NBA’s All-Star Weekend festivities. She expressed that everyone seems the same, lacking individuality.

Later, she further criticized Angelenos for preferring phone conversations over face-to-face interactions. It was quite the bold statement, perhaps a bit too bold.

In a metropolis of about 4 million, it’s not surprising that some residents might seem stiff or preoccupied. Yet, L.A. is also home to resilience, creativity, and many vibrant personalities—and yes, there are dancers here too.

Of course, the city has its share of problems, including crime and leadership shortcomings, such as how to revitalize aging areas like MacArthur Park and how to handle disasters like the Palisades fire.

Nonetheless, L.A. holds immense potential. Its diversity makes it an exciting place, rich in different styles and cultures. From the allure of Hollywood to the beautiful sunsets over the Pacific, it boasts tech innovation in Silicon Beach and a legacy in sports with the Lakers and Dodgers.

There is so much incredible art, cuisine, and medical expertise to explore.

With the World Cup approaching and the Summer Olympics scheduled for 2028, the future looks vibrant.

Cunningham, now with the Indiana Fever, gained recognition in a league that includes the Los Angeles Sparks. The WNBA is even expanding to cities like Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia soon.

At California Post, we appreciate all cities but feel a special connection to L.A. We’re dedicated to being part of this vibrant environment, committed to investing in its future, and pushing for accountability in a state that often seems directionless. Like many, we echo Newman’s sentiment: “We love L.A.!”
