Another Skier Dies at Northstar Ski Resort in Truckee

Tragic Skiing Accidents in Greater North Lake Tahoe

A man from California experienced a devastating skiing accident at a resort in the Greater North Lake Tahoe area. Stuart McLaughlin, a 53-year-old resident of Hillsboro in the Bay Area, tragically lost his life on Sunday at Northstar Ski Resort in Truckee.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office reported that they responded to the skiing accident around 11:30 a.m. on February 15. According to a representative from the resort, McLaughlin was involved in an incident with another skier while navigating one of the advanced slopes.

The other skier sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office extended its condolences to McLaughlin’s family and friends. This heartbreaking event marks the second skiing fatality at the resort in just one week. Earlier, a 26-year-old man from Los Angeles, Nicholas Kenworthy, also lost his life in a skiing accident on February 11. Kenworthy was reportedly struck while attempting a black diamond run on the mountain’s backside.

This winter has been particularly harsh, with further tragedies occurring near Lake Tahoe. Recently, a group of backcountry skiers was caught in a devastating avalanche, resulting in eight deaths among the 15 individuals involved.

Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon provided a somber update on Wednesday, a day after the avalanche. He shared that four tour guides and 11 guests were trapped in the slide. Among the group, six people were rescued—one man and five women aged between 30 and 55—while eight individuals were confirmed dead, and one person remained missing.
