Including cultural traditions will make your wedding ceremony stand out.

If you’re aiming to avoid a typical wedding experience, there’s a straightforward way to make it more memorable. By weaving in elements that reflect your family’s culture and traditions, you can truly personalize the celebration.

According to bridal stylist Zoe Byrd Krause from New York City, adding personal touches can significantly enhance the day. “Weddings can sometimes feel a bit generic,” she noted. “This approach really makes it feel special.”

Here are several imaginative ideas that couples have used to deepen their family ties.

Be Meaningful

Elise Goldman, who tied the knot at Brooklyn’s River Cafe, shared that one of her most cherished moments was when her father placed a tallit (a Jewish prayer shawl) over her and her partner. “It’s a powerful symbol of continuity and change,” Goldman reflected. “It reminds me of my father and the new journey my husband and I are on.”

Serve Something Special

Incorporating your guests into your love story can also come through food, especially a unique cake. For stand-up comedians Heather Shaw and Lily Jean Coyner, this meant having a vegan chocolate cake made by Coyner’s Aunt Val during their New Year’s Eve wedding. “Aunt Val’s cake is legendary; even ten years later, people rave about it more than our graduation barbecue,” Coyner recalled. “It felt like a wonderful way to bring our families together.”

Include Family Mementos

Megan Heavener from Field Floral Studio in Portland emphasized the importance of keepsakes. Attaching brooches, lockets, or other sentimental items to bouquet handles can create a personal touch without overwhelming the wedding’s overall aesthetic. “Couples are looking for ways to make their ceremonies meaningful,” she explained. “These little items anchor their special day to their family’s history.”

Plan a Traditional Dance

Ariana Sorrento Callahan wanted her wedding reception to be vibrant and dynamic, so she organized a tarantella, a spirited Italian dance. She described it as invigorating, with guests forming circles and joyfully moving together. “My friends still tell me it was the highlight of the night,” she said, emphasizing the importance of honoring her Italian roots.

Repurpose Wedding Dresses

When Morgan Kilmer was preparing for her wedding last fall, she felt a strong desire to include her late grandmother in some way. Discovering her grandmother’s wedding dress in an unpreserved state was a surprise. “The seamstress helped me modify it for my reception, and I even had a pocket square made for my dad from the leftover fabric,” Kilmer shared. “Wearing a part of her dress felt like a connection to her during such a pivotal moment in my life.”
