A recent event at a college basketball game turned chaotic when a student got a bit too close to Nebraska’s head coach, Fred Hoiberg. After the Iowa Hawkeyes secured a 57-52 victory over the No. 9 ranked Cornhuskers, fans rushed onto the court. This excitement led to an incident where Hoiberg seemingly swatted away a cellphone that a student was using to film. The student cut into the handshake line, and eventually, an official from Iowa State had to intervene and escort him off.
Iowa State has since issued an apology. They noted that the fan “accessed the court from a restricted area” and placed Hoiberg, as well as Nebraska’s players and staff, in a potentially dangerous situation. The university assured the public that they will review their security procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The Big Ten Conference has been in touch with both universities regarding the incident but reiterated that they won’t take any disciplinary action against Hoiberg. They appreciate Iowa State’s proactive steps to improve postgame security. Meanwhile, Nebraska hasn’t released a comment on the matter.
Iowa State, while unranked, entered the game as slight underdogs, with the Hawkeyes favored by 1.5 points. It’s interesting, though, how the game unfolded with all the fan enthusiasm overshadowing the actual competition.
While the Big Ten is not known for issuing fines for court storming, it’s clear that there could be consequences if it’s found that adequate safety measures were overlooked. It makes you wonder—how many more of these incidents before a more substantial reaction occurs?
