Funding Challenge for World Cup in Foxborough
The home of the New England Patriots is secure—at least for now. This summer, Foxborough, Massachusetts, is set to host seven World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium. However, the organizing committee for the event in the Boston area is still struggling to gather the necessary funds.
During a recent meeting of the World Cup Host City Initiative in Foxborough, city officials expressed concerns over the lack of financial backing. “I’m surprised you can’t sit here and say, ‘I got paid,'” remarked Mark Elfman, a member of the Foxborough Select Board, directed at football officials.
With a significant amount, reportedly around $7 million, needed to ensure the event runs smoothly and securely, board members made it clear they would not issue entertainment licenses until the funds are secured. As for the organizing committee, they emphasized that the delay isn’t due to the federal government, but rather an expected wait for payments.
Mike Roynd, CEO of Boston 26, mentioned, “This task force is in constant communication with DHS and FEMA regarding funds.” He added that they’d been informed such delays are somewhat anticipated.
Bill Yukna, another Selectman, pointed out that the World Cup, lasting 39 days, is like hosting seven Super Bowls simultaneously, necessitating security measures daily during the tournament. “All we are trying to do is protect our people,” he stated, echoing a sentiment many officials seem to share.
Stephanie McGowan, the vice chair of the selection committee, was straightforward with soccer officials, stating that the small community of around 18,000 residents can’t foot the bill for the required expenses. “We can’t issue this license until we have everything sorted out,” she declared firmly.
Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will see matches in a record 16 venues, planning continues. Alongside two locations in Canada and three in Mexico, notable U.S. stadiums include AT&T Stadium in Texas, SoFi Stadium in California, and NRG Stadium in Houston.
The selection committee plans to reconvene on March 3rd, with a license issuance deadline set for March 17th.
