Stephen A. Smith Presses Governor Newsom for Appearance
On a recent podcast, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith expressed his ongoing anticipation for California Governor Gavin Newsom to come on his show. He mentioned his desire for Newsom to address significant issues impacting the state, such as homelessness, rising crime rates, and California’s sanctuary status amid what Newsom has labeled “billions of debt.”
Smith also highlighted data from Real Clear Politics, showing former Vice President Kamala Harris in the lead for the Democratic presidential nomination at 31%, with Newsom trailing at 22%. He remarked that Harris’s prominence is indicative of a lack of standout candidates within the party. “Gavin Newsom, 22%. Mr. Governor, we’re still waiting for you to appear,” he said, repeating his request for Newsom to join him.
Smith emphasized that he simply wants to ask questions and hear responses without making things uncomfortable for the governor. He pointed out that, regarding the homeless situation, former President Barack Obama recently criticized the ongoing crisis, calling it an “atrocity” given the financial investments by local officials.
In a separate conversation, Obama stressed the need to recognize the humanity of the homeless and advocate for supportive policies. “The public has to realize that they don’t want to be walking around in a tent city in the middle of downtown,” he added, criticizing the political implications of such issues.
Smith has been vocal about his disappointment with Newsom’s repeated refusals to join his show, describing it as something Newsom is evading. He challenged the governor, questioning why he would not want to engage with the public when aiming for a presidential candidacy in 2028.
When approached for comment, Newsom’s team indicated that the governor has been busy but still plans to appear on Smith’s show. There seems to be a growing anticipation regarding this potential interview and how it might address pressing state issues.
