Student Protest Confronts ICE in Palm Beach County
A protest organized by students against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement occurred on Monday afternoon in Palm Beach County. During the event, a large group of high school students moved to a nearby road after leaving classes, and unfortunately, several were struck by vehicles.
The West Palm Beach Police Department reported that emergency services responded to a vehicle-pedestrian accident near South Wind Plaza on North Military Trail at around 12:30 p.m.
Authorities indicated that one minor, reportedly part of the protest, was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle involved stayed at the scene and was cooperative with law enforcement.
Footage from the scene showed the minor lying on the pavement while police and firefighters provided assistance.
This situation unfolded during a planned walkout that involved students from at least four high schools in the area: Lake Worth Beach High School, John I. Leonard High School, Royal Palm Beach High School, and Palm Beach Lakes High School. Reports suggest the accident was related to the walkout at Palm Beach Lakes.
Students exited their schools during class time to voice their opposition to federal immigration enforcement policies, leading to sizable gatherings downtown and at key intersections.
An advisory from Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamousas, sent to the Florida Department of Education on February 3, cautioned the school district about protests happening during school hours. He emphasized that while students have a right to express themselves peacefully, such actions should align with laws and school policies. Any violations could result in disciplinary measures.
The Palm Beach County School District has previously stated that leaving campus during school hours breaches safety protocols and might lead to disciplinary repercussions.
When approached for a comment, the district redirected inquiries to school police, who did not respond, and Palm Beach County Police also declined to comment further.
Details regarding the circumstances of the crash and whether any citations were issued have not been disclosed as of now.
