Shift in Texas Republican Party on School Choice

In Texas, there’s been a notable shift as Republicans opposing school choice have been ousted from positions in the state Capitol, indicating a new benchmark for the party’s ideology. State Representative Brian Harrison, who represents the 10th Congressional District, mentioned to Fox News that he is unaware of any Republicans in Congress who stand against school choice, suggesting that Texas has entered a “new paradigm.”

Harrison expressed, “They’re probably afraid to admit they’re against educational freedom.” He won against an incumbent with an anti-school choice stance back in 2021.

“I grew up in this area of Ellis County, which is my district—mostly rural, just south of Dallas,” he noted.

Trump’s Involvement in Republican Senate Primary

As early voting began for the upcoming Texas primary, set for March 3, Harrison is facing challengers Matt Autier and John Garrett. He has labeled Autier a “fake Republican,” accusing him of opposing school choice and aiming to “destroy public schools under the guise of educational freedom” in 2023. Autier, according to his campaign promises, aspires to “bring more money to the classroom.”

Typically, local Republicans have sided with Democrats, often voting against school choice policies, but this has changed. Both rural Texas Republicans and their Democratic counterparts argue that vouchers could undermine public school funding.

It’s worth noting that Autier did not respond to requests for comments regarding these accusations.

Harrison’s victory over fellow Republican John Ray in September 2021 was significant, as he defeated a six-year incumbent known for being “vehemently opposed to school choice.” He recalled a time when returning to his local school district post-Trump presidency, he was advised to steer clear of school choice discussions, stating, “No one who has ever held my position has supported school choice.”

Texas Leads in Education Policy Changes

Cory DeAngelis, an advocate for school choice and senior fellow at Americans for Fair Treatment, stated that Texas is becoming a model for making school choice essential for conservatives. “This complete purge is a warning to Republicans everywhere. If you side with the unions, you may end up facing the same fate,” he emphasized.

A lot of this change can be traced back to Governor Greg Abbott, who has pledged to support candidates who oppose school choice, actively involved in fundraising efforts for 2024 pro-school selection candidates after his struggles to gain support for a universal school choice bill.

Tommy Schultz, president of the American Federation for Children, has also played a crucial role in backing pro-choice candidates, aiming to eliminate anti-school-choice perspectives from the Republican primaries. In 2023, there were 21 Republicans who opposed the education savings account program, and Schultz indicated that many of them have either retired or lost their primary bids.

For example, nine of those 21 legislators lost their primaries in the midterms, while six have since announced their retirement. “What it means is that none of the 21 Republicans who voted against this in 2023 will be returning to Congress in 2027,” Schultz noted.

Abbott’s spokesperson emphasized, “Governor Abbott has made it clear that parents, not government bureaucrats, should be the primary decision-makers when it comes to their children’s education.”

According to Leal, “Texans overwhelmingly supported school choice in the 2024 primary.” He added that empowering parents is central to conservative values, noting a recent surge in applications for the Texas Education Freedom Account.

Under Abbott’s leadership, more than 85,000 Texas families applied for the program just last week, placing the state on a path to becoming a leader in educational outcomes for children.
