Will LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and Luka Doncic be able to work together for a successful NBA playoff journey?

Lakers’ Season Midpoint: Navigating Injuries and Uncertainty

At this stage of the season, most NBA teams are feeling the strain of the long grind. However, the Lakers, sitting at 33-21 in fifth place in the Western Conference, seem to defy those limits. This feat is particularly notable given that LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reeves have only shared the floor together in 10 of their 54 games.

When you consider the circumstances, it’s quite impressive. James has missed 18 games due to sciatica, including the first 14. Doncic has been sidelined for 12 games, unable to play the last four due to tightness in his left hamstring. Meanwhile, Reaves was out for 26 games, which included over a month for a strained left calf.

This trio—the Lakers’ main stars—has managed just 152 minutes on the court together this season. For a bit of perspective, Luke Kennard, whom the Lakers acquired at the trade deadline, has already played 96 minutes. Even Bronny James, averaging just 7.3 minutes per game, has logged more time on the court with 211 minutes.

It’s apparent that the Lakers’ offensive capabilities remain an enigma. Currently ranked 11th in the league in that aspect, the question hanging over them is significant: who really are they? If their top three can stay healthy, could they actually make a meaningful splash in the playoffs?

James, with a storied career featuring 10 Finals appearances and four championships, admits he isn’t sure about the outcome either. “I know we looked really good when we played our best basketball this season,” he said, adding, “On the other hand, when we did something terrible, we looked disgusting.” He also emphasized the importance of his health, stating the need to build chemistry quickly.

Interestingly, when analyzing their time together, stats show there’s been a net negative rating of -7.8 when Doncic, James, and Reeves have played concurrently. It remains uncertain if their skills are just overlapping too much or if it’s simply a case of not enough time to develop a rhythm. Doncic leans toward the latter, suggesting they possess “huge potential.”

On an individual level, Doncic leads the league in scoring (32.8 points) and ranks third in assists (8.6). Reaves is having a breakout year, averaging 25.4 points alongside 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Meanwhile, James, at 41 years old, is putting up impressive numbers with 22 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.1 assists.

As the Lakers gear up to face the Clippers, it’s expected that this big three will cooperate for their 11th game together. Doncic hinted he’d “probably” be practicing, and Reaves is now free of minute restrictions. James, having had some rest following his 22nd All-Star Game, seems poised for action.

With just over a third of the season ahead, the pressure is mounting for them to figure things out. Interestingly, the trade deadline passed fairly quietly for the Lakers, with Kennard added to bolster their offense but no moves to enhance their struggling 23rd-ranked defense.

Thus, the Lakers’ prospects hinge largely on whether James, Reeves, and Doncic find a way to elevate their game. There’s ongoing debate about whether they should aim for a top-four seed for home court advantage or prioritize health, even at the risk of slipping in standings.

Ultimately, it may be crucial for them to focus on the latter. A lineup featuring Doncic, James, and Reaves could present a formidable challenge during the playoffs, provided they commit to defense alongside role players like Marcus Smart, Rui Hachimura, Jared Vanderbilt, or Deandre Ayton.

James knows what it takes to win as the season progresses. Doncic led the Mavericks to the Finals in 2024, and Reaves is eager for redemption after his struggles last postseason due to a sprained left toe. However, in a cutthroat Western Conference filled with strong competitors like the Thunder, Spurs, and Nuggets, their success fundamentally relies on maintaining a healthy roster.

Yet, questions loom large. There’s no denying the potential of this Big Three, but whether that potential will ever fully materialize remains uncertain.
