Actor Eric Dane Diagnosed with ALS
Eric Dane, known for his role as Captain Tom Chandler on the TNT drama The Last Ship, revealed in April 2025 that he has been diagnosed with ALS, a debilitating disease that progressively attacks nerve cells responsible for muscle control. The show was discontinued in 2017, coinciding with Dane’s struggles with depression.
ALS gradually deteriorates essential nerve connections, affecting a person’s ability to move, speak, or breathe. Unfortunately, most individuals diagnosed with the disease have a life expectancy of just three to five years.
During a press conference in Washington, Dane took a moment to discuss the importance of health insurance pre-authorization and spoke passionately about raising awareness for ALS. “Some of you might recognize me from shows like ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ but today I’m here as a patient advocating for those battling ALS,” he stated in June 2025. Later that September, he received the Advocate of the Year Award from the ALS Network for his commitment to supporting others affected by the illness.
Dane was born on November 9, 1972, in Northern California. Tragically, his father, a Navy veteran and architect, passed away from a gunshot wound when Dane was just seven. Following high school, he relocated to Los Angeles to follow his acting aspirations, making guest appearances on various shows, including Saved by the Bell and Charmed, as well as in films like X-Men: The Last Stand.
His memoir, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, is slated for release at the end of 2026 under Maria Shriver’s The Open Field, a Penguin Random House imprint. The book aims to capture defining moments from Dane’s life, including his experiences on Grey’s Anatomy, his daughters’ births, and his ALS diagnosis.
“I want to document the moments that have influenced me—the joyful times, the challenges, the days that I cherished. I hope readers will take away the significance of living with heart,” Dane mentioned in a statement, adding that if his story can provide meaning to someone else, then it’s worth sharing.
He is survived by his estranged wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teenage daughters, Billy Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. Dane and Gayheart married in 2004, had a separation in September 2017, and while Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, she later sought to dismiss that application. In a December essay for New York magazine’s The Cut, she described their relationship as “complicated,” stating they did not finalize their divorce but are living apart and dating others.
“Our love might not be romantic, but it is a familial love,” she reflected. “Eric knows I always want what’s best for him. I plan to support him in any way I can, and I trust he’ll do the same for me.”
