Authorities have initiated a hate crime investigation following a break-in at the residence of influencer Christy Cook, also known as Spiel Sesh, in Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day, involved robbers ransacking her home and damaging a Buddhist statue.
The assailants forced their way through the back door of Cook’s home in the San Fernando Valley, making off with multiple items. Notably, a Buddha statue was discovered shattered in the driveway.
Investigators from the Los Angeles Police Department are currently trying to determine if the destruction was deliberate, thus prompting inquiries into potential vandalism targeting religious symbols.
Cook was away during the incident, so the exact monetary value of the stolen items remains unclear. Up to this point, no arrests have been made.
A recent report indicated that Los Angeles is set to experience the highest levels of hate crimes seen in 44 years by 2024.
While anti-Asian hate crimes saw a 34% decrease from 2023, this demographic continues to be one of the most frequently targeted groups based on race or ethnicity. Meanwhile, incidents involving Buddhists accounted for only 1% of religiously motivated hate crimes in 2024, with three reported cases.
In an interview, Cook, who identifies as an Asian American, reflected on her racial identity. She expressed the significance of being a visible voice in the AAPI community, emphasizing the need for diverse perspectives and representation.
“It means a lot to me,” she stated. “It’s really meaningful for me to be in a position where I can represent someone else. Being a visible AAPI voice in this space is not just about identity, but bringing a different perspective that is thoughtful and informed, and hopefully opening the door for more voices to be heard.”
