Alex Ferreira Triumphs in Men’s Halfpipe Final
After topping the men’s halfpipe final, Alex Ferreira felt the pressure at the finish line.
Although he was in a position to at least secure a bronze, complications arose when his teammate Nick Goepper, who was in bronze position, was eliminated. Ferreira aimed to maintain his gold standing.
Unfortunately, Goepper’s attempt to complete his final trick led to a harsh fall, crashing at the pipe’s edge.
He received attention from medical staff but managed to exit the area on his own.
Brendan McKay pushed Ferreira until the last moment, but ultimately could not surpass the Colorado native.
With this victory, Ferreira, at 31, becomes the oldest gold medalist in the men’s halfpipe event.
When McKay’s score was announced, he celebrated with a fist pump and sank to the snow, momentarily in shock, as the crowd erupted in excitement.
His final run brought in a score of 93.75, sealing his win.
Estonia’s Henry Sildar took home the silver with 93.00 points, while Canada’s Mackay completed the podium with a bronze at 91.00 points.
McKay’s conclusive run effectively removed Goepper from the medal chase, and fellow American Hunter Hess finished in 10th place.
Upon arriving in Milan, Ferreira had a strong feeling he was meant to win gold.
“It’s honestly the best feeling to compete in the Olympics,” he shared with Olympic.com. “I’m in peak physical shape, feeling good emotionally, and mentally everything is on point. Honestly, I think it’s about time for a third attempt at this!”
“I genuinely believe that I will win the gold medal. It would be the highlight of my life. Just thinking about it brings me close to tears,” he added.
Ferreira has now secured every medal in the men’s freeski halfpipe, having previously won a silver in Pyeongchang in 2018 and a bronze in Beijing in 2022.
