Vermont Couple’s Parenting License Reinstated After Opposition to Transition Practices
A couple in Vermont, Melinda Antonucci and Casey Mathieu, has had their parenting license reinstated after facing challenges for their opposition to child gender transition practices. According to a report from Fox News, the Vermont Department of Children and Families (DCF) had mandated that they attend LGBTQ training as part of the licensing process.
Throughout this process, discussions around medical procedures for children transitioning to the opposite gender occurred. Antonucci stated that their motivation for becoming foster parents was to assist children in need.
He expressed that the state attempted to disqualify them due to their beliefs, noting that their recent settlement enables them to continue helping foster youth. He hopes it also prevents other families from facing penalties for being honest and practicing their faith.
The Center for American Freedom (CAL) mentioned on Friday that a court settlement with the DCF marked a significant civil rights case against Vermont’s efforts to impose ideological criteria on foster care licensing.
The settlement stipulates that states must “adopt and implement statewide practice guidance” regarding licensing discussions connected to LGBTQ issues and minors.
In March 2024, Senator Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) introduced legislation aimed at preventing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from enforcing rules that could bar parents who disagree with gender ideology from fostering children, as reported by Breitbart News.
The article also highlighted a report by a French senator, which claimed that the act of child transition would be seen as “one of the biggest ethical scandals in the history of medicine.”
Additionally, the piece noted that countries like Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have begun to limit the use of puberty blockers due to associated side effects and long-term impacts, suggesting a global shift concerning transgender issues.
Former President Joe Biden’s administration, on the other hand, has been criticized for promoting left-leaning transgender policies for children and admonishing parents who disagree.
In relation to the Vermont case, Josh Dixon, California’s chief attorney, remarked that the state appeared to be turning foster care licensing into an ideological vetting process, which could hinder the ability to serve at-risk children. He emphasized that the settlement is a significant win for children’s rights and safety, asserting that the focus should be on providing genuine care rather than aligning with political beliefs.
