Nick Goepper’s Final Olympic Run
Nick Goepper went all in during his last run at the Olympics. The 35-year-old American skier appeared poised for a podium finish at the men’s halfpipe freestyle skiing event in Milan, but his final jump ended in disappointment.
He successfully completed his earlier jumps, but when it came to the fifth and final one, he just didn’t get enough height, landing heavily on the halfpipe edge.
For a few tense minutes, Goepper lay in the snow, prompting concern as medical staff rushed to his side, seemingly preparing to carry him off on a stretcher. However, showing remarkable resilience, he stood up on his own, flashed a thumbs up, and walked away from the scene.
To add to the disappointment, Canadian skier Brendan McKay outperformed Goepper, edging him out for the bronze medal.
On a brighter note, Goepper’s teammate, Alex Ferreira, clinched the gold medal. Goepper, who had previously won three Olympic medals across Sochi, Pyeongchang, and Beijing, still hasn’t secured a gold.
Interestingly, the trick Goepper attempted was a first in competition history. Reflecting on the experience later, perhaps he felt it was worth the risk. After all, he seemed to convey that he had no regrets as he departed the mountain.
