Potential Return of Sidney Crosby for Gold Medal Game
Team Canada might see a significant boost for the Olympic gold medal game on Sunday against the U.S. men’s hockey team, as captain Sidney Crosby could possibly return to the lineup.
Crosby, aged 38, missed Canada’s 3-2 semifinal victory over Finland on Friday due to a lower-body injury sustained during the quarterfinals against the Czech Republic. However, he participated in practice on Saturday. Canada’s head coach, Jon Cooper, mentioned that the final decision about Crosby’s participation would be made closer to game time.
Cooper reportedly stated, “We’ll see. I saw him skate today. I haven’t talked to him yet. We’ll meet tonight and decide what happens tomorrow.”
“He’s not going to put himself at risk. He’s not going to put the team at risk. Of course, we want to have him, but that decision will be made tonight,” Cooper added, emphasizing Crosby’s impact rather than just his presence.
Cooper also pointed out the importance of having players who can inspire the team, explaining, “It’s crucial that we have players who not only help us but also inspire us. You never know when injuries can occur during games, and he wouldn’t want to jeopardize the team.”
U.S. Team’s Strong Performance
Meanwhile, Team USA has performed impressively, notably defeating Slovakia, and they will face Canada for the Olympic gold medal.
The International Ice Hockey Federation requires that a team has a player with a “C” on their jersey. Since Crosby was sidelined for the semifinals, Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid took over the captaincy in his absence. McDavid expressed that the team hopes Crosby will get a chance to play on Sunday, stating, “We definitely wanted to give him another chance to play. Now that we’ve done it, let’s take a look.”
Despite sitting out, McDavid mentioned that Crosby is maintaining a positive attitude and is still contributing to the team.
On the other hand, Team USA’s Tage Thompson participated in their skate on Saturday after being ejected in the third period of their match against Slovakia. He was held out for the rest of that game as a precaution.
The much-anticipated gold medal match is set for Sunday at 8:10 a.m. Eastern Time.
