Sweden Secures Gold in Women’s Curling
Sweden’s success in women’s curling remains impressive. On Sunday afternoon in Cortina, Anna Hasselborg guided Sweden to a narrow 6-5 win over Switzerland, clinching another gold medal for her country.
It was an exciting and closely contested match. A key moment came when Hasselborg stole points in the eighth end, putting Sweden ahead with a 5-3 lead. Although Switzerland managed to score two points in the ninth end with a strong final shot, Sweden only needed a point to seal the victory.
This matchup featured the same nations that competed for gold in Turin back in 2006, when Anett Norberg led Sweden to victory. Interestingly, that was also when Switzerland last secured a medal in women’s curling, finishing with silver under Mirjam Ott’s leadership.
Impressively, Hasselborg has now led her team to six consecutive Olympic medals, including four that are gold. She previously brought home gold in 2018 and bronze in 2022. It’s notable that only the top medal position has shifted since the last Olympics, with Hasselborg consistently placing in the top rankings.
On a different note, Team USA, captained by the seasoned Tabitha Peterson, faced disappointment in their run at Cortina. They performed better than expected by reaching the semifinals, but ultimately fell short against Team Canada in the bronze medal match. The game was tight until the fifth end, where Canada capitalized with significant points to win 10-7. This win marked Canada’s first medal in women’s curling since 2014.
Earlier, in a semifinal match, Switzerland dominated Team USA, outscoring them with a performance that showcased impressive throwing accuracy. Swiss vice Alina Petz was particularly outstanding, making crucial shots en route to a 7-4 victory.
In the other semifinal, Sweden managed to take down Canada, eliminating Homan’s team. Canada struggled in that match, with Homan’s personal performance hindered by the aggressive plays from the Swedish side, particularly Sarah McManus, who secured a solid win over her opponent.
Medal Round and Beyond
As for how the medal round shaped up, Sweden and Switzerland had already secured their semifinal slots. Four other teams—Canada, South Korea, USA, and UK—strived for the last two spots. Interestingly, the U.S. advanced after a tense win against Switzerland.
This led to Team USA’s first semifinal appearance since 2002. It was a well-fought battle against tough competition, proving their mettle in the tournament.
Looking ahead, the 2026 Olympics have plans for three returning members from Sweden’s gold medal team. They’ve shown strong form, starting off the round robin with a perfect record until a minor setback against South Korea.
In a twist of fate, Canada initially struggled but found their rhythm later in the tournament, managing to qualify with a dramatic win against South Korea, turning their fortunes around.
