Retaliation Follows Death of Notorious Cartel Leader
Mexican military forces reportedly killed the head of one of the most dangerous drug trafficking organizations in the Western Hemisphere during a Sunday operation, leading to violent reactions across several states.
Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” was confirmed dead during a military operation in Jalisco state, according to a federal official who wished to remain anonymous. The Associated Press reported the details of this significant event.
The Trump administration had labeled the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) a foreign terrorist organization back in February 2025. The U.S. Department of State noted that federal authorities have offered a reward of up to $15 million for information that could lead to El Mencho’s capture. CJNG is involved in trafficking fentanyl and other serious crimes, including extortion, migrant smuggling, and arms trafficking across various regions of Mexico.
Following the operation, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro activated emergency protocols statewide. He communicated on social media that federal forces had conducted actions in Tapalpa, which led to clashes, as well as widespread arson of vehicles and blockades set up to obstruct authorities’ efforts.
In the aftermath, CJNG members set fire to over ten vehicles throughout Puerto Vallarta. Public transportation was halted in tourist areas for safety, and hotels advised guests to remain indoors, with many businesses temporarily shutting down.
The Canadian government updated its travel guidance in light of ongoing gunfights between security forces and criminal groups. Reports indicated that Puerto Vallarta remains under a shelter-in-place order, with all taxi and ride-share services suspended indefinitely.
According to Milenio, El Mencho established CJNG and rose to prominence as the country’s most powerful cartel leader following the arrest of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
The unrest didn’t stop there. Michoacán Governor Alfredo Vedra indicated that disruptions were reported in 13 municipalities across his state as well.
