Team Canada’s Silver Lining Turns to Punchline

It’s official: Nathan MacKinnon has become the punchline for Team Canada!

Gold medals were on the line during the Olympic men’s hockey final between the United States and Canada, which ended in a 2-1 overtime thriller on Sunday. It was an intense matchup that saw Team USA secure its first gold in nearly five decades, thanks to a last-minute goal from center Jack Hughes.

After the match, Canada accepted its silver medals with mixed feelings. While they grinned and bore it, it was clear that all was not well—especially for star player Nathan McKinnon.

Earlier, I couldn’t help but call out McKinnon for claiming Canada was the “better team.” Given how this Olympic experience played out for them, it now feels a bit cruel to bring it up again. But, well, here we are.

According to NBC, a stuffed animal named Tina the stoat and another one called “Flo” were distributed to all medal-winning athletes, regardless of their sport. However, when it came time to hand these out to the Canadian team, their enthusiasm was noticeably lacking. McKinnon, in particular, looked visibly frustrated, practically ready to throw the plush toys across the room.

It’s all kind of funny, really. I mean, here’s a star athlete, feeling the sting of defeat, grappling with a bizarre situation involving a stuffed animal. Who knew losing could come with such a peculiar twist?

I guess that’s the Olympics for you—equal parts glory and absurdity.
