Sarah Chalke Reflects on Challenges of Working on Roseanne

Sarah Chalke, known for her role as Becky Conner on *Roseanne*, discussed her experiences during her time on the show, which began in 1993. In a candid conversation on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, the actress shared some of the intense dynamics between the cast and writers.

Chalke, who stepped into the role that Lisie Goranson initially played, mentioned, “The only reason I actually even got the job was because I was so naive, I didn’t really understand it.” She went on to explain that, in hindsight, she realizes how much pressure there was in that situation.

When the topic turned to the “tension” between the writers and co-creator Roseanne Barr, Chalke reflected on the atmosphere on set, describing it as “insane” and likening it to a pressure cooker.

After Chalke replaced Goranson, she encountered mixed feedback from fans. One viewer remarked, “I much prefer the first Becky,” and while she acknowledged Goranson’s talent, she expressed her gratitude for her own opportunity.

Following the original series, which aired from 1988 to 1998, John Goodman and Barr launched a reboot, airing nine episodes from March to May 2018. However, Barr found herself in a whirlwind of controversy that summer due to remarks she made about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to President Obama, which ultimately led to her being let go from the show.

Barr later apologized, indicating that her comments were part of a “bad joke.” In light of the reboot’s success, the network chose to rename the show to *The Conners*, addressing Barr’s absence through a storyline involving her character’s off-screen death.

In a documentary titled *Roseanne Barr is America*, Barr shared her perspective on her fall from grace, revealing why she declined ABC’s proposal to return as a ghost in the reboot. “You want me to come back on the show you stole from me and killed my lover, and now you want me to play the part of a ghost just because the ratings are low?” she stated in the film.

When approached about guest-starring in *The Conners*, Barr swiftly declined, recalling, “I’m going bowling this week.” She mentioned that representatives from both ABC and her team did not respond to requests for comments at that time.

After the fallout from her tweet, Barr spoke with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, expressing her feelings of sadness and regret: “I feel like I’ve apologized, explained, asked for forgiveness and made amends… I never meant to hurt anyone or say anything negative about an entire race.”
