Hughes Brothers Celebrate Gold Medals in Milan

While two of the Hughes brothers celebrated their gold medals in Milan, the third brother stayed back in New Jersey.

Luke Hughes, a defenseman for the Devils, expressed his surprise at the performances of his brothers, Quinn and Jack, especially during the gold medal match against Canada, which Jack clinched in overtime.

“For me, it was just a shock,” Luke shared with reporters after the game. “I was jumping up and down while everyone was celebrating. I’m really happy and so proud of them. It’s such a great accomplishment. I think we’re all still in shock that they won the way they did.”

During the tournament, Jack and Quinn stood out, each scoring seven points, tying for the team lead.

In a thrilling moment, Jack scored the decisive goal just 1 minute and 41 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime against Canada, securing the United States its first men’s hockey gold since 1980.

Interestingly, Jack and Quinn weren’t the only ones in the family to achieve gold in Milan. Their mother, Ellen Weinberg Hughes, serves as a player development consultant for the U.S. women’s hockey team, which also triumphed over Canada in overtime, thanks to a goal by Megan Keller.

Luke reflected on his mother’s contributions, saying, “I’m so proud of her and the work they’ve done with them. I know they’ve really utilized her and she’s a big part of it, but it’s an honor for both teams to bring home the gold medal.”

Currently in his fourth season with the Devils, Luke has tallied five goals and 21 assists in 49 games. Meanwhile, Jack has recorded 12 goals and 24 assists, and Quinn, playing for the Wild, has a notable 52 assists this season.

While recovering from a dislocated shoulder, Luke mentioned he watched some of Team USA’s games “from the couch” during the match on Sunday.

The U.S. hockey team’s success contributed to a solid performance overall, with Team USA finishing second, behind Norway, with 12 gold medals out of a total of 33 medals.

The contributions of the Hughes brothers were undoubtedly significant in this achievement.
