Towns Shines as Knicks Take 2-0 Series Lead

It’s not often you see such intensity from a player. Few can match the sheer strength that Karl-Anthony Towns demonstrated in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Towns finally broke through some of his past struggles, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while dishing out seven assists in just 27 minutes. This performance played a crucial role in the Knicks’ 108-102 victory over the 76ers at Madison Square Garden, giving the Knicks a 2-0 lead in the series.

So far in the playoffs, he’s been shooting an impressive 59.7% from the field, hitting 13 of 19 shots in the first two games against Philadelphia, and averaging 10.5 rebounds per game. It’s a strong turnaround for a player who’s faced criticism in the past.

Interestingly, Towns, who averaged only 3.1 assists throughout the first 11 years of his career, has transitioned into a new role as a point center. Over the past five games, he has averaged 7.8 assists, with all those games resulting in wins for the Knicks.

“When the ball hits my hands, I make the right plays,” Towns noted reflectively. “Whether it’s driving, passing, shooting, or just slowing the game down to get everyone organized, I want to make a difference in winning, and I did that today.”

In Game 2, the absence of Mitchell Robinson due to illness put additional pressure on the team. Towns had to navigate foul trouble early, being called for a moving screen just two minutes in and picking up a second foul later in the first quarter. This led Coach Mike Brown to call on Ariel Hukporti, who isn’t a frequent go-to.

Brown acknowledged, “It’s tough competing without Mitch. He’s vital to our strategy. He just needs to avoid those unnecessary fouls.” Towns, not wanting to compromise his physical style of play, expressed the need for discipline. “We’ve got to do better. We can’t keep putting the team in that position,” he said.

Despite only playing a fraction of the first half, Towns made sure to stay ready. “I may not have logged many minutes early on, but I used that time to recharge and be that spark when I came back,” he said.

As the second half began, he immediately made an impact, starting with a three-pointer and showcasing some impressive moves. He quickly found his rhythm, hitting six straight shots at one point. Even in moments when he got fouled, he managed to keep his focus, praying and making baskets amid distractions.

“I wanted to set the tone for the game,” he said. “I could feel my hands warming up.” Despite later picking up a fourth foul in the third quarter, he was ready to return for the fourth, contributing nine rebounds and a couple of assists, even if he only took two shots in that period.

In essence, he knew it was about making a meaningful impact.
