California to provide $35 million for support of undocumented immigrants, according to Newsom

California Governor Gavin Newsom has revealed plans to distribute $35 million in state funds aimed at aiding undocumented immigrants as the Trump administration implements a large-scale deportation strategy.

According to a press release from Newsom’s office, this funding will come from money Congress allocated in the state’s budget, intended to empower philanthropic groups in providing food assistance and other essential resources to immigrant families.

This new funding is an addition to the legal resources the state already offers for individuals facing deportation.

Newsom expressed his concerns, stating, “While the federal government targets hard-working families, California stands by them, uniting partners and providing funding to local communities to support our neighbors.” He pointed out that the situation is getting dire as federal policies lead to mass incarcerations and undermine due process, observing, “Just as the Trump administration chooses cruelty and chaos, California chooses its communities.”

A spokesperson for the governor mentioned ongoing discussions with immigrant families and community leaders regarding the federal government’s immigration policies.

They noted, “People are afraid to leave their homes, go to school, or work, and they struggle to afford groceries,” highlighting the anxiety in the community.

Despite anticipating a $2.9 billion deficit for the upcoming budget year, the state is allocating these funds, even after previously limiting health insurance options for undocumented immigrants to manage last year’s budget shortfall.

Kim Johnson, California’s Health and Human Services Secretary, remarked, “When federal actions create fear and instability, our responsibility is to show up for families. This investment strengthens local partners who help people access legal services and meet their basic needs during an incredibly difficult time.”

Democratic state Senator Lena Gonzalez, who chairs the California Latino Legislative Caucus, stated that this funding demonstrates her party’s commitment to supporting immigrant families.

Gonzalez categorized the federal government’s actions as a direct assault on the community, stating, “We are putting money into efforts to stop fear, stop family separation, and end violations of fundamental rights.”

On the other hand, Republican Rep. Carl DeMaio criticized the funding, labeling it “ridiculous.” He argued that citizens wouldn’t expect free legal aid for tax issues, questioning the rationale behind offering help to undocumented immigrants.

Former President Trump has focused heavily on immigration policies, implementing aggressive deportation tactics and signing a budget that allocates $170 billion for immigration enforcement aimed at potentially removing up to 1 million undocumented immigrants annually over four years.

California’s funds for legal resources are specifically designed to assist those not convicted of felonies or violent crimes, as reported. Additionally, state law allows corrections officers to transfer undocumented immigrants with severe convictions to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, a Democrat, emphasized California’s stance against the Trump administration’s policies, promising to confront intimidation and fear with decisive action.
