Controversy Over Hockey Teams’ Response to Trump’s State of the Union Invitation

Former ESPN broadcaster Keith Olbermann expressed his frustration with the U.S. men’s ice hockey team for accepting President Donald Trump’s invitation to attend the State of the Union address. In contrast, he praised the women’s hockey team for declining the offer.

Both teams recently celebrated Olympic gold medals, with standout performances by Jack Hughes and Megan Keller in their respective matches against Canada. Following their victories, President Trump invited both teams, but the women’s squad turned down the invitation, citing prior commitments related to academics and professional obligations.

USA Hockey released a statement acknowledging the women’s team’s remarkable achievements and explaining their inability to participate due to timing conflicts. The organization seemed to value the honor while respecting the players’ commitments.

Olbermann shared his approval of the women’s team’s decision on social media, noting, “The official US team that won Olympic hockey gold medals has declined an invitation to serve as a political prop for President Trump at tomorrow’s SOTU,” highlighting the women’s principled stand.

However, he criticized the men’s hockey team for their reaction during a phone call where Trump extended the invitation. When Trump suggested attending the address, he encountered interruptions from players, which Olbermann interpreted as problematic behavior, stating that “Men are still too stupid, narcissistic, and misogynistic to realize that if they continue like this, they will be stuck with them forever.”

Additionally, Olbermann reacted to a controversial social media post by the White House featuring an eagle attacking a goose, a reference tied to the U.S. team’s recent win. This post followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s remarks regarding the competition between the two nations, which had sparked some tension in the hockey community.

As excitement built around the teams’ achievements and the political backdrop, Olbermann’s comments underscored a broader discourse on how athletes and public figures navigate political invitations and recognition. Yet, players like Matthew Tkachuk expressed pride at receiving a call from the president, framing it as a significant acknowledgment of their hard work and contributions.

The status of the men’s acceptance of the invitation remains somewhat unclear as they celebrated in Miami, performing at a nightclub shortly after their victory. As anticipation builds for Trump’s address scheduled for Tuesday night, the NHL’s regular season is set to continue thereafter.

In a light-hearted moment during the call with the men’s team, Trump humorously suggested sending a military plane to facilitate their attendance, while also implying the necessity of including the women’s team to avoid political backlash. Meanwhile, the Women’s Professional Hockey League plans to resume play soon.
