Hilary Duff shares her yearly argument with husband Matthew Koma

Hilary Duff Talks Marriage and Music

Hilary Duff’s life with husband Matthew Koma has been, for the most part, pretty harmonious, with one exception—an annual “protracted” argument. The actress and singer, now 38, shared that while they practically never fight, they do have one heated discussion each year that adds a bit of flavor to their relationship. Since collaborating on her album, “Luck…or Something,” their bond has often been in the public eye.

Duff reflected on their music partnership in a conversation with Dakota Fanning for Interview magazine. “I really had no intention of working with anyone else,” she said. “It had to be just us. He knows all the ups and downs I’ve gone through, so it just felt right.” When asked about people wondering if they argue, she was quick to say, “We literally never fight.” Well, almost never.

It’s not like they have a blissful trend of peaceful cohabitation. Duff surprisingly admitted, “Actually, we do have a battle once a year.” Koma joked about how it’s been a while since their last knockdown drag-out, prompting a light-hearted acknowledgment from Duff. She recalled a moment recently when things got heated, saying, “I threw his cell phone into some bougainvillea bushes during a fire evacuation.” It was a unique moment, to say the least.

Despite her history as a rising star on the Disney Channel, Duff took a significant step back from the spotlight for a while. After releasing her album “Dignity” in 2007, it wasn’t until 2015 that she dropped “Breathe In. Breathe Out.” Shifting gears, she focused on independent films and motherhood, welcoming three additional children with Koma.

Now back in the music scene, her recent tour tickets vanished quickly, with 175,000 fans scrambling to get in line. Still, she sometimes grapples with the guilt of leaving her kids, even though they enjoy her work. Duff shared, “My son, who’s 13, is proud of me, but I think he’s also a bit embarrassed by all the internet buzz. The girls, though? They think I’m super cool.” Their excitement for her performances adds a layer of support that she cherishes.

Returning to music after years of focusing on family wasn’t a straightforward decision for Duff. “I grew up wanting to be a pop star, but then life happened,” she reflected. “I thought I should figure out how to be the best mom possible first.” Though she dabbled in acting, including roles in projects like “Younger,” creating music felt daunting after so long.

Having taken a break, Duff pondered if she could even perform in smaller venues. Now, though? “I’m feeling more drawn to connect with people and share my experiences,” she concluded, hinting at a renewed passion for her artistry.
