Geno Auriemma Reflects on Final Four Loss

Geno Auriemma, who has secured 11 national titles, recently acknowledged that he reacted immaturely during his team’s Final Four defeat.

Speaking from the University of Washington, Auriemma touched upon the heated exchange he had with Dawn Staley, the head coach at the University of South Carolina.

In the final moments of the 62-48 loss to South Carolina, Auriemma was visibly frustrated with their aggressive style of play and the officials’ lack of calls. He suggested that Staley had ignored him during a pregame handshake.

Staley, on the other hand, appeared unfazed, exuding the confidence of a coach with a strong team. She remarked that Auriemma was “not thinking about you,” implying that he was overly focused on the game.

Auriemma reflected on his actions, saying, “Sometimes I act on impulse, but typically it’s due to pressure that’s been building.” He admitted feeling foolish, lamenting why he couldn’t just hold on for a few more seconds after the game. “We’re all human, and we make mistakes,” he said.

He later added, “I wish I could have back those five seconds, but that’s not how it works.” Perhaps, rather than analyzing handshake moments, Auriemma should channel his energy into strategizing against Staley’s formidable team in the future.
