Cows escape and halt traffic on upstate NY highway during snowstorm

They won’t cause any trouble!

A couple of cows on the loose created traffic chaos on a highway in upstate New York, offering drivers a peculiar spectacle while struggling to catch them amid a snowstorm.

Right around noon on Monday, as Buffalo faced the onset of a snowstorm, two cows leaped from a livestock trailer during the blizzard near Ridge Road and Route 179, according to authorities.

While efforts were underway “to round them up,” the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) cautioned drivers to expect delays on top of the already challenging weather conditions.

The cows wandered back and forth across the grassy median, making for a strange scene.

A group of responders got one cow circled, crouching down to avoid alarming it, but the cow quickly took off, evading their attempts.

One frustrated responder tried to use a truck to corral the cow, but it simply walked around the vehicle.

Motorists stared in disbelief as they crept closer to the scene.

“Traffic slowed and we couldn’t immediately see what was happening. When we got closer, my boyfriend’s mother said, ‘Is that a deer? Oh wait, no, it’s a cow!'” Michelle Frechette recounted. “It was a bit shocking, definitely not something you see every day.”

“The GPS indicated an accident, so I was anticipating cars in a ditch, not cows relaxing in the median,” Keith Bradley commented.

Despite the unusual situation, NYSTA reported that the cows were back in their trailer by 12:30 p.m. but warned that “delays remain” and advised drivers to be cautious.

Social media users also found humor in the incident, commenting on the unexpected traffic hold-up.

“This is utterly absurd! McDonald’s over there is probably out of Big Macs tonight,” joked one user on X.

Another quipped, “Drivers just need to steer clear!”

Fortunately, no accidents or injuries related to the escaped cows were reported.
