Tragic Shooting in Hartford Claims Life of High School Senior

A 17-year-old high school senior tragically lost his life after being struck by a stray bullet while waiting for a ride home in Hartford, Connecticut. This incident occurred early Sunday morning, just two days before he passed away from critical injuries sustained in a nearby shootout.

Camden Segal was waiting for an Uber outside a bar in downtown Hartford when the violence erupted. Another victim, a man in his 20s, was also shot and remains in serious but stable condition, although it’s unclear if he was the intended target or simply caught in the chaos.

Camden, who attended Hall High School in West Hartford, was set to graduate in June. His family shared that he was enjoying a night out with friends when the shooting occurred. They described him as a kind and determined individual who had a special love for animals, especially his four dogs and cats. His family emphasized the strong bonds he formed with friends, characterizing their relationships as rooted in loyalty and trust.

“Camden’s time with us was too short, but the love he gave and the memories he made will remain in our hearts forever,” they stated, adding that he made the selfless choice to donate his organs, allowing part of him to continue living on through others.

Camden’s father, Eric Sagal, had passed away unexpectedly in August 2021, which has added to the family’s grief. Described as a dedicated honor student，Camden excelled in lacrosse, soccer, and even track and field. He was also the editor of the school newspaper, often focusing on multimedia content. Notably, he previously addressed the pressing issue of gun violence on a podcast.

In a clip from the podcast, Camden pondered, “How can we stop innocent people from being shot?”—a reflection that now feels hauntingly ironic. Despite the tragic rise in gun-related incidents and hate crimes, he noted a lack of significant changes in gun control laws during recent discussions.

As Camden’s funeral approaches this Thursday, his family has set up a memorial fund in his name aimed at providing academic and athletic scholarships for young people in the West Hartford area. Meanwhile, the investigation into the shooting continues, with no arrests made as of yet.
