Rick Pitino Recognizes Key Players Amid Season Challenges

About a year ago, Rick Pitino named Zuby Ejiofor the most valuable player, with RJ Lewis Jr. being the standout player and Cadary Richmond as the most crucial player.

This week, Pitino faced a similar situation due to injury concerns.

He once again praised Ejiofor as the best player but also highlighted Dillon Mitchell as particularly valuable and appealing.

“Clutch players really know their value,” said Pitino, referring to Dylan Darling as “Big Bells.” This nickname came after Dahlin hit a crucial three-pointer in the closing moments of a game against Xavier on January 24.

Following that match, Pitino remarked about Dahlin’s confidence, noting it was as if he had “a ball the size of a church bell.” In fact, St. John’s University now gives a “Big Bell” award to the player who plays a key role in each victory.

The team even acquired a large bell to mark this achievement.

In the past nine games, Dahlin has been averaging 10.3 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.4 steals from the bench, scoring 16 points or more in three of those matches.

Coaches across the Big East, including Dan Hurley of Connecticut and Greg McDermott of Creighton, have praised the transfer from Idaho State for his dual-threat capability.

Although Pitino has opted not to start Dahlin—mainly to avoid early foul issues—he still recognizes his importance on the team.

“I’ve got to hand it to him,” Hurley expressed on Tuesday. Initially, there were doubts about their point guard situation. Yet, Dahlin has proven to be tougher than expected, coming through in crucial moments. He was a game-changer during their encounter at the Garden,” Hurley acknowledged.

As for upcoming games, Pitino mentioned that Ian Jackson, who suffered an ankle injury, is set to practice and play fully on Tuesday. However, he doesn’t anticipate Jackson starting right away. Freshman guard Kelvin O’Dea is still ruled out due to a sore foot.
