Trump criticizes Democrats for not supporting the protection of Americans against 'illegal aliens' at the State of the Union 2026

During his speech, President Trump took aim at Democratic lawmakers who did not support his assertion that the primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to safeguard Americans from illegal immigration.

The president expressed his discontent toward those Democrats who chose to stay seated, declaring they should feel “ashamed.”

“I urge all members of Congress to stand with my administration on this crucial principle. If you believe this statement holds true, please stand and demonstrate your support. The fundamental duty of our government is to protect Americans, not illegal immigrants,” Trump stated amidst applause from the House attendees.

Vice President J.D. Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson joined the Republicans in standing up, while many Democrats remained seated, clearly rejecting the president’s call.

Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona seemed particularly displeased, as Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from Minnesota interrupted Trump with loud heckling.

Omar was heard referring to Trump as a “murderer,” but the noise from the cheering Republican crowd overshadowed her remarks.

“You killed Americans,” Omar yelled at him.

Trump responded, admonishing the Democrats by saying, “You should be ashamed of yourselves for not standing up for the truth.”

He added further criticism by urging them to dismantle sanctuary cities that, in his opinion, protect criminals and impose stricter penalties on public officials who hinder the deportation of criminal aliens.

“In many instances, drug traffickers and murderers are preventing these individuals from leaving our nation. You should really be ashamed of that,” he concluded.
