Fetterman Critiques Democratic Response to State of the Union
On Wednesday, Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania criticized his party’s behavior during Tuesday night’s State of the Union address.
President Donald Trump delivered a lengthy speech, lasting nearly two hours, where he highlighted the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, honored two service members with the Medal of Honor, and spoke out against welfare fraud involving Somali scammers in Minnesota. Fetterman specifically took issue with Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who interrupted Trump while he discussed illegal immigration.
“Honestly, all the shouting and holding up signs—it’s not appropriate, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat. This is the president; there should be a level of decorum,” Fetterman said during an interview with Bill Hemmer on “America’s Newsroom.”
“Respect the office, no matter who occupies it. It’s discouraging when many from my party are absent or choose to yell during these moments. I don’t think that’s what we should be doing, and I doubt most Democrats believe that,” he added.
On Twitter, Omar accused Trump of being shot by a Department of Homeland Security officer amid a confrontation over ICE operations.
At a protest rally organized by MoveOn.org, former MSNBC host Joy Reid faced heckling, and Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut was confronted on stage, with someone calling him a “scumbag.”
In November, reports surfaced about fraud in Minnesota, claiming that some proceeds were funneled to the terrorist group al-Shabaab. Following this, Trump revoked the “temporary protected status” for many Somalis in the state. A federal estimate later suggested that the fraud could have cost at least $9 billion, describing it as large-scale fraud.
Independent journalist Nick Shirley sparked considerable online discussion with his comments in December, sharing a video and photos of a Minneapolis area daycare center that went viral.
