Florida Community Calls for Investigation After Tragic Incident
A Florida community is pressing for a deeper investigation of a woman following the death of her boyfriend’s three-year-old daughter. Jeron Jarrell Coombs, 32, has been arrested on suspicion of fatally beating the child.
On Thursday, Coombs was watching the children of Paisley Brown, the girl’s mother, at their mobile home in Citra. The children ranged from ages 1 to 9. According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Coombs stated that he had tied the girl’s hands with a robe tie and her legs with painter’s tape to prevent her from reaching her diaper.
Authorities responded to a call around noon after the girl was found unresponsive. Unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
It was revealed that Coombs had contacted the child’s mother at approximately 10:58 a.m. to inform her that the child was not responsive, yet he did not call for emergency assistance until about 40 minutes later.
The girl’s mother reportedly exclaimed, “My baby is gone!” upon discovering her daughter in her high chair.
One of the other children present disclosed that Coombs had hit Paisley and hinted at a history of physical abuse from him.
During police questioning, Coombs allegedly admitted to causing the injuries. He mentioned that he picked up Paisley while she was still bound and dropped her on the floor, leading her to gasp for breath.
Lt. Paul Bloom indicated that Coombs acknowledged he had “gone too far.” Meanwhile, the other four children have been placed under the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Coombs has been charged with aggravated child abuse, and additional charges may follow. He remains in custody at the Marion County Jail without bail.
On Saturday, a group gathered to demand accountability regarding the child’s mother. Protest organizer Carly Santana expressed frustration over how law enforcement interactions sometimes take too long. “I think anyone involved should face questioning by a police officer,” she stated.
Paisley’s father, Robert Brown, shared with the crowd that his daughter’s death could have been avoided. “Paisley was amazing, always happy and full of life,” he reflected.
Authorities are looking into why there was a delay of 40 minutes before Paisley’s mother sought emergency help.
