Why NBC Sports unexpectedly ended their relationship with Phillies sideline reporter Taryn Hatcher

Departure of Taryn Hatcher from NBC Sports Philadelphia

Recently, NBC Sports Philadelphia (NBCSP) announced the unexpected exit of Taryn Hatcher, the sideline reporter for the Philadelphia Phillies. Her tweet declaring “the cat is out of the bag” sparked significant online chatter last week.

Alexandra Matcham, the vice president of content at NBCSP, elaborated on the decision, noting that the network is shifting its storytelling strategy to better engage a wider audience. This change, she explained, means adjustments in how they cover the sport.

“As baseball evolves, so does our coverage,” Matcham explained. “We aim to enhance storytelling in fresh ways, ensuring fans who can’t be at the stadium receive the most entertaining and informative broadcasts we can offer.”

Matcham expressed confidence that this season would see a new approach to their coverage.

Taryn Hatcher, who was not only a sideline reporter for the Phillies but also worked within the 76ers’ games, joined NBCSP back in 2018. She initially reported rink-side for the Flyers and later hosted a pre- and post-game studio show before taking on her role with the Phillies.

As for the current season, Hatcher’s name was surprisingly absent from the recently announced Spring Training Compensation Plan. It turns out the network opted not to renew her contract, eliminating the position following its expiration at the end of the 2025 season, as reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In her response to the news, Hatcher described the situation as “heartbreaking,” detailing what she was informed regarding her departure. She stated, “Unfortunately, I will not be returning to cover the Phillies this season.”

Hatcher went on to reflect on her time with NBCSP, saying, “At the end of the 2025 season, I was told my sideline role would be cut. Although it’s tough news, I genuinely enjoyed my time. Thank you to everyone who supported me and the incredible individuals I’ve met along the way.”
