Senate Republicans React to Democrats’ Response at State of the Union
The Senate’s top Republican expressed that the behavior of Congressional Democrats during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address highlighted a notable disconnect from reality.
As President Trump delivered a noteworthy speech, mentioning Olympians and war heroes, many Democratic members remained seated and largely unresponsive. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) interpreted this as a clear reflection of the deep political rifts in Congress.
“It was like seeing two Americas,” Thune remarked.
During the speech, Trump urged Democratic lawmakers to stand up, but this plea, which came midway through, was largely ignored. “I call on all members of Congress to work with the administration to reaffirm our fundamental principles,” he stated. “If you agree with this statement, please stand up and show your support. The American government’s first duty is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” In response, Democrats remained seated.
Thune commented, “And obviously, I think you saw us Republicans on the floor expressing our support. I don’t know how to explain the contrast when he asks a question and asks people to stand and all the Democrats are seated. We literally live in two Americas.”
Some Democratic representatives chose to boycott the speech entirely, opting for an event in Washington, D.C., or simply observing from afar. Those who attended engaged in some disruptive actions—like Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who was removed after displaying a controversial sign. Additionally, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar shouted remarks during the evening.
The day after, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump’s address, stating, “Last night was not America’s State of the Union; it was Donald Trump’s delusional state.” He condemned Trump for seemingly praising himself without addressing the country’s pressing issues, asserting that the president lived in a “bubble.”
Thune, for his part, suggested that the Democrats’ behavior reflected their policy positions, arguing that many Americans are witnessing a party that endorses open borders and sanctuary cities while undermining law enforcement. He voiced hope that there are still Democrats who aim to serve the nation’s best interests.
