Boat shooting between the US and Cuba: Russia cautions against more 'provocative actions'

Cuban Coast Guard Shoots Four on U.S.-Registered Vessel

There’s been a major incident between the Cuban Coast Guard and a U.S.-registered speedboat, resulting in at least four deaths. This event has caught the attention of international observers, including legal expert Eugene Kontorovich, who weighed in on the implications of U.S. actions towards other countries like Iran, particularly regarding their nuclear ambitions.

A notable reaction came from Russia, with officials warning about escalating tensions around Cuba following this gunfight. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the U.S. aims to gather independent details about what happened on that day and plans to respond appropriately once more information is available.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted the situation, expressing concern over the humanitarian aspects and urging that no barriers be placed in addressing the needs of the Cuban people. He emphasized the need for caution around the island, suggesting that restraint is vital to avoid further provocations.

According to Cuban authorities, the confrontation began when five military personnel approached the Florida-registered boat in Cuban waters. The report indicates that the individuals aboard the vessel opened fire, prompting a return of gunfire from Cuban forces. The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that four individuals from the boat were killed and six others were injured. Additionally, a crew member from the Cuban side was reported injured as well.

Interestingly, Cuban officials labeled the passengers on the boat as armed individuals from the U.S. intending to invade the island and commit acts of terrorism. They mentioned that these individuals reportedly have histories of violent behavior.

The boat in question is registered in Florida with the number FL7726SH and is categorized as a 24-foot pro-line model, based on data obtained by sources.

Rubio remarked on the unusual nature of such a gunfight occurring at sea, suggesting it’s not something one encounters often—saying frankly, it’s been quite a while since Cuba experienced events like these. He assured that the full story will be uncovered soon, stating that they will respond based on the findings.

U.S. Attorney Jason Redding Quiñones expressed distress over the tragic event, noting that while the Cuban regime claims self-defense, the details remain murky and contradictory.

Efforts are underway to clarify the incident thoroughly and ascertain if any of the victims were American citizens or legal residents, as officials strive for a fair investigation into the troubling circumstances surrounding the shooting.
