New Mural Celebrates Alisa Liu in Los Angeles

Alisa Liu, the talented UCLA figure skater, is making waves—not just on her social media but also on massive murals around Los Angeles.

This week, a striking mural honoring her recent win at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games was unveiled, and it’s quite the sight to behold.

Created by artist Gustavo Zermeño Jr., the mural is located at 15532 Crenshaw Road in Gardena. He started painting it on Tuesday, inspired by Liu’s gold medal performance in Italy.

“I think her personality really captivated America,” Zermeño commented. She has ties to the Bay Area and UCLA, which gives her a local connection. His goal, he shared, was to create something that not only inspires himself but also resonates with America and especially encourages younger generations.

The mural depicts Liu right after earning the first Olympic gold for U.S. women’s figure skating in over two decades, an achievement celebrated on February 19th.

In the artwork, Liu is shown with a huge grin, biting her trophy, with her playful earrings and her unique, streaked hair color. There are plans for an additional image of her skating to be incorporated into the background, though the timeline for completion is still uncertain.

Zermeño expressed hope that the mural would positively impact the community, saying, “It would be great if she saw this, but this is for us. This is for the community and to inspire young people.”
