Texans to Revamp Coaching Staff
The Texans are set for a shake-up in their coaching team.
On Thursday, ESPN reported that Houston is letting go of their quarterbacks coach, Jerrod Johnson.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Jerry Schuplinski, who specializes in the passing game, is poised to take over Johnson’s role.
Johnson has been with the Texans for three seasons.
This year marked DeMeco Ryans’ first season as head coach, during which he oversaw the impressive performance of C.J. Stroud, the No. 2 overall pick and AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. Stroud had over 4,000 passing yards, a solid 23 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. But, if we’re being honest, he hasn’t quite matched that level since. He racked up 20 interceptions and 39 total touchdowns in the subsequent two seasons, appearing in 31 games while averaging 218.3 yards per game.
With Stroud’s decline in performance, the team faced struggles during the playoffs.
In 2024, they won against the Chargers in the Wild Card Round but fell to the Chiefs in the Divisional Round. In his fourth season, Stroud’s performance indeed contributed to a loss against the Patriots, with a score of 28-16.
This downturn likely played a role in Johnson’s departure, although reports suggest it was a mutual decision.
Schuplinski, his likely successor, has been in the NFL since 2013, starting as an assistant with the Patriots. He has also worked with the Dolphins, Raiders, and Rams before joining the Texans in 2025. Through his career, he has coached notable quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford.
Now, he faces a crucial task: revitalizing Stroud’s performance to return him to his rookie form. Stroud has just one year left on his rookie deal, and the Texans must decide soon about exercising his fifth-year option.
General manager Nick Caserio, for his part, has dismissed any trade speculation surrounding Stroud. At the NFL Combine on Tuesday, he asserted that Stroud is “not going anywhere,” describing rumors as “silly.” Stroud himself expressed commitment to Houston, saying he loves the city and wishes the situation had played out differently.
In addition to Stroud, Schuplinski inherits a quarterback room that includes Davis Mills and Graham Mertz, each in their sixth and second years, respectively. It’s an uphill battle, but turning Stroud’s career around is his immediate challenge.
