Glenn Kuiper Returns to Broadcasting

Glenn Kuiper is back on air, almost three years after he made headlines for a racial slur during a broadcast. He’ll be back in the radio booth on March 3, calling the Giants’ spring training game against Team USA.

Kiper, who is the younger sibling of longtime San Francisco announcer Duane Kiper, is set to feature in 10 to 15 Giants broadcasts throughout the regular season, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

This return comes after a significant incident last year. During a pre-game show on May 5, 2023, while discussing a visit to the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City, Kuiper mistakenly used a racial slur. At that moment, it seemed he faltered in his speech, leading to the controversial slip.

He quickly addressed the situation, offering an apology during the sixth inning of the game, stating, “A little while ago on the show, I said something and it didn’t come out the way I wanted it to. So I just wanted to apologize if it didn’t sound like what I wanted to say.” However, his remarks prompted NBC to suspend him after the game.

A few weeks later, Kuiper, who had been announcing for the A’s since 2006, was let go. NBC Sports California stated, “After an internal review, NBC Sports California has decided to terminate its relationship with Glenn Kuiper effective immediately. We would like to thank Glenn for his many years of contributions to Bay Area baseball.”

In expressing his frustration with the decision, Kuiper remarked that it was hard to understand how one mistake in a 20-year career could lead to termination. He insisted that “racism has never been a part of who I am.”
