Tess Holliday criticizes the system as 'fatphobic' following a reported denial of life insurance.

Model Tess Holliday shared on Wednesday that she was refused life insurance coverage due to her weight. In a TikTok video, she sarcastically reflected, “I’m sorry. Yes, me too. As a 40-year-old, non-smoker, and in good health, I thought getting life insurance would be straightforward. But, maybe it’s just my fault.” She added, “Yes, I’m over 5-foot-3 and weigh more than 300 pounds. Apparently, that’s the issue.” Holliday emphasized her daily exercise routine, absence of pre-existing health conditions, and lack of medication.

She labeled the “medical industrial complex” as “fatphobic” and expressed that “the system is broken.” With a sarcastic tone, she stated it was her “responsibility” and noted that such situations likely won’t occur again, calling it a lesson learned. In her post caption, she mentioned feeling “shocked” by the denial.

Holliday remarked, “But hey, I also understand that the medical-industrial complex is fatphobic and that the system is inherently broken.” Last week, she shared a video of herself in a green bikini, joking about weight loss not defining her personality. In another caption, she challenged the notion of self-acceptance being viewed as toxic.

She has also spoken about a previous incident on a United Airlines flight where a flight attendant suggested she lose weight. While flying first class with her son, she described being hit by the attendant’s comments after leaving the bathroom, which persisted for about ten minutes. She detailed that the attendant discussed weight loss in a way that left her feeling stunned, especially given that her son was present.

In response to the flight attendant’s remarks, Holliday mentioned she conversed with United Airlines to ensure no one would lose their job, emphasizing the need for sensitivity training to prevent similar experiences in the future. As she pointed out, the aim isn’t to punish but to raise awareness. It’s worth noting that this type of discourse can have lasting impacts on individuals, and recognizing that is crucial.
