How 'Grey's Anatomy' honored Eric Dane one week after the death of the 'McSteamy' actor

“Grey’s Anatomy” Honors Eric Dane

On Thursday’s episode, “Grey’s Anatomy” paid tribute to Eric Dane, who is fondly remembered for his role as Mark “McSteamy” Sloan. He character graced the ABC medical drama for seven seasons, and a 60-second montage showcased many of his most memorable moments.

The tribute featured a cover of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” performed by Tommy Proffitt and Fleury, which has become almost synonymous with the show. This song first made an appearance in the Season 2 finale back in 2006, coinciding with Dane’s guest role.

The montage highlighted significant moments, like the introduction of his character—appearing in nothing but a towel—and his evolution from a serial dater to a devoted father. One notable line from his character reflects a deeper sentiment: “Why do you ask for time when there is no guarantee that it will come?” In another scene, he expressed that love should be declared, even amidst fear of vulnerability.

The tribute concluded with a poignant memory of his character, who tragically died in a plane crash during Season 7, telling Meredith Gray, played by Ellen Pompeo, “Don’t waste a second.” A heartfelt caption accompanied the video on the show’s Instagram, reading, “In loving memory of Eric Dane ❤️.”

Dane first appeared in Season 2 as a guest before becoming a regular in Season 3; ultimately, he departed the show during Season 7. He sadly passed away on February 19, following a year-long battle with ALS, at the age of 53. A statement from his family conveyed the heavy burden of his loss and acknowledged his role as an advocate for awareness and research related to ALS.

His family mentioned that he appreciated the support from his fans and requested privacy as they navigated this difficult time. Following his passing, co-stars from “Grey’s Anatomy” shared heartfelt tributes on social media, including touching words from Kate Walsh and Chyler Leigh. Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed Derek Shepherd, described Dane’s death as “horrible, harsh, and life-changing.” He noted that Dane was dearly loved and would be deeply missed.

Dane is survived by his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
