A Texas newscaster has come under scrutiny after making an odd remark about Oreos that were released in conjunction with the K-pop group BTS. The comments sparked criticism online, as the anchor jokingly suggested that the cookie packaging spelled out “Death to America.”
During a light-hearted segment on Tuesday, FOX 34 Lubbock anchor James Eppler, along with his co-anchor, discussed the special limited edition cookies. He began by describing the filling as inspired by hotteok, a sweet Korean pancake that some BTS members enjoyed in their childhood.
“That’s great,” his co-anchor responded, seemingly unfazed.
Eppler continued, saying, “The cookie wafers are purple—BTS’s signature color—and they include one of 13 different designs. When put together, the designs spell out a message to fans: ‘Death to America.’ I think that’s really weird.” His co-anchor looked visibly taken aback.
“No, it’s not,” Eppler quickly added, laughing it off.
Another co-anchor suggested that perhaps some viewers might be tuning in for the first time. Eppler then moved on with the segment, but the comment quickly ignited outrage on social media, with many viewers and BTS fans labeling it inappropriate.
In defense of the collaboration, Oreo described it as “deeply meaningful,” highlighting how BTS incorporates elements of Korean culture into a beloved snack.
As the backlash grew, fans took to social media demanding either an apology from Eppler or even his dismissal from the station. Comments like, “We need to train newscasters better,” and “There’s no room for ignorance in journalism,” highlighted the sentiment among some viewers.
One fan noted, “If you know BTS, they are among the humblest and most respectful people.” Another remarked in disbelief, “What did I just hear?”
Throughout the aftermath, Eppler appeared to remain silent regarding the controversy, although the call for accountability was strong. This incident arose during a successful week for BTS, who swept the 2026 American Music Awards, taking home three trophies, including Artist of the Year.
In his acceptance speech for the Artist of the Year award, BTS leader RM expressed gratitude, saying, “Our greatest appreciation goes to the Armed Forces around the world who have supported us over the past 13 years. Thank you so much.”
