CNN Faces Uncertainty Amid Ownership Changes
Fridays at CNN have reportedly taken on a tense atmosphere. Leaders at the network are attempting to calm their anxious employees as Warner Bros. Discovery appears ready to transfer control of CNN to Paramount CEO David Ellison.
Recently, Netflix rescinded its offer to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery after it was revealed that Paramount had put forth a “superior” proposal to acquire all of its assets, which includes CNN. This transition means that Ellison, known for his ties to former President Donald Trump, is set to take the helm at CNN. His past moves, like appointing Bari Weiss as CBS News’ editor-in-chief, have stirred significant controversy among those with liberal viewpoints.
A source within CNN described the current environment as “terrible,” expressing that many team members are feeling “very upset.”
Another insider shared that the staff is grappling with a mix of despair, anxiety, and curiosity about the situation. “This place has been through so much in the last decade with various mergers and ‘fresh’ starts,” they noted. There’s a genuine apprehension about how the news divisions will integrate. Questions linger—who will be let go?
It’s not uncommon for large corporate mergers to lead to layoffs, and given CBS News’ recent history of job cuts under Ellison’s oversight, the concern is palpable. Weiss, chosen by Ellison, was frank with her staff regarding the performance of CBS News, stating, “We’re not producing a product that enough people want.”
CNN staffers now worry they too might face a similar fate, especially with thoughts that Weiss could have connections to the ongoing struggles of the cable network. Former CEO Chris Licht’s attempts to temper the partisanship in CNN echo the anxieties of many employees.
Following the news of Netflix opting out, current CNN CEO Mark Thompson reached out to employees through a memo. He announced plans for an internal meeting to address the unfolding situation and answer questions to the best of his ability.
Another CNN official articulated the fears surrounding “job losses” and “editorial indifference” as paramount, with the former issue being of much greater concern. Insiders are especially worried about the potential fallout if a merger between CBS News and CNN occurs, which they fear could be disastrous.
Those familiar with CNN’s inner workings are accustomed to shifts in corporate ownership, having navigated through many changes over the years. There’s a shared understanding that even if the deal goes through, Ellison won’t take full control immediately. “The closing might not happen for a while,” someone mentioned, sensing the fluidity of the situation. “Things might change before then.”
Thompson, in his memo, tried to temper the uncertainty, urging staff not to jump to conclusions and to maintain their focus on delivering quality journalism to their audience despite the chaotic backdrop of midterm elections and other pressing global events. Yet, an undercurrent of worry persists—many staff members are contemplating their futures even before official changes are enacted.
As CNN has largely positioned itself against Trump over the last several years, the network is now facing the repercussions of having a potential owner so closely affiliated with a political figure. There’s tension as both staffers and officials try to keep an open mind while wrestling with the potential implications of Ellison’s relationship with Trump.
In the end, there’s uncertainty. While the situation is evolving, employees seem to feel that they can only react to what is known now. The future remains unwritten.
