State of the Union Reveals Division Among Lawmakers

During the State of the Union address, President Donald Trump posed a question that highlighted the political divide in Congress. He asked Democrats to stand if they could prioritize American citizens over those living in the country illegally. A notable number of Democrats chose to remain seated, which sparked various reactions.

Johnny Bellisario, a producer for “Jesse Watters Prime Time,” visited the Capitol to engage with lawmakers who stayed silent during this moment. He posed the question directly, asking Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer if he stood up. Hoyer admitted he did not and dismissed the inquiry as a “bad question,” indicating he disagreed with the framing of the issue.

Other Democrats expressed similar sentiments. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal labeled the president’s question a cheap “gimmick,” while Arizona Senator Mark Kelly insisted that congressional members shouldn’t be involved in theatrics.

In another incident, Rep. Al Green from Texas was removed from the chamber for the second consecutive year, this time for holding a sign that stated, “Black people are not monkeys!” When asked about his priorities, Green proclaimed his commitment to the Constitution and the protection of American citizens and foreigners alike.

As he faced criticism for the outburst, he attributed the situation to his colleagues, suggesting they caused the disturbance rather than him. Texas Republican Rep. Troy Neals countered, calling out Green for trying to draw attention to himself with such antics.

House Republicans are now taking steps to censure Greene due to the uproar created during the address. Some Republicans contended that protests during speeches should be avoided altogether. Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman emphasized the need for respect within the legislative space, regardless of personal feelings towards the officeholder.
