San Francisco Was Enjoying Its Shift Toward Moderation, But The Extreme Left Is Making A Comeback

San Francisco’s Political Landscape Shifts Amid Concerns

San Francisco has long been known for its progressive politics, a reputation that’s been cemented over the years. However, the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdowns seems to have nudged the city’s political climate towards moderation.

As the 2024 elections approach, there are indications that this shift could be reversed. Moderate Democrats in San Francisco are reportedly gearing up financially for what some view as a potential surge in progressive candidates. A nonprofit group, Neighbors for a Better San Francisco, has disclosed that it has amassed $10 million to counteract this possible resurgence. They believe these funds could play a crucial role in hindering progressive candidates from regaining influence at City Hall and bringing down a proposed ‘CEO tax’ set for the June primary ballot.

Gary Tan, the CEO of Y Combinator, expressed concerns about a forthcoming tax starting in December 2025. He warned that it could stifle startups and innovation in California.

The turning point for San Francisco’s political outlook can be traced back to the immediate aftermath of the pandemic. In 2022, voters decided to recall the then-District Attorney, Chesa Boudin, just two and a half years after he took office. Boudin was noted for his progressive stance, but growing frustrations surrounding issues like car break-ins, theft, homelessness, and general disorder led to his downfall. The group Neighbors for a Better San Francisco credits this recall as a significant step toward restoring public safety.

In a notable incident from 2022, three members of the San Francisco School Board were also recalled. These members faced backlash for opposing well-publicized reforms, such as renaming schools and altering the admissions policy at Lowell High School. The organization claims these members not only mismanaged the district but also harmed students and kept schools shuttered.

Looking ahead, Daniel Lurie, heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, was elected as the city’s mayor in 2024, finding support even from some center-right groups. However, extreme left candidates might see a chance to capitalize on the prevailing sentiments about President Donald Trump as they vie for power in City Hall.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Raphael Mandelman shared a perspective on the current political landscape, noting the challenge of maintaining a centrist stance in an environment filled with both pragmatic thinkers and idealists. “We have realists and utopians,” he remarked.

The upcoming election poses an intriguing question for the residents of San Francisco: will they remember the challenges they faced under far-left leadership, or will they forget and lean towards candidates who may be more lenient on crime in the name of opposing Donald Trump?
