Devin Williams Makes Grapefruit League Debut with Mets

In Jupiter, Florida, Devin Williams had his first Grapefruit League start in a Mets uniform, and it didn’t go unscathed. During the fourth inning at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, a pitch of his vanished into the stands.

In a moment still in practice mode, Williams tossed a cutter that found its way into JJ Weatherholt’s hitting zone. “I was just aiming to throw a strike,” he reflected after the Mets triumphed over the Cardinals 14-3. “He capitalized on it, so that’s how it goes.” Despite that setback, Williams quickly regrouped, getting the next three batters out in that inning.

Interestingly, he clocked an average of 93.8 mph on his four-seam fastball. Manager Carlos Mendoza shared his thoughts: “That cutter didn’t quite cut as he wanted. He’s still working on it. But I was pleased with his fastball, and he threw some solid sliders too. Overall, not a bad inning for him.”

Williams, who recently joined the Yankees on a three-year, $51 million contract and spent last season with them, mentioned he feels he needs around eight or nine spring training games under his belt before the regular season kicks off.

Meanwhile, MJ Melendez, also with the Mets, showcased his power by hitting two home runs, both to the opposite field. The outfielder is eager to secure a spot on the team after signing as a free agent three weeks ago.

“I expected to learn a lot coming here,” Melendez noted. “I had a general understanding of my abilities, but not exactly how to maximize my potential. It’s been a valuable learning journey so far.” His focus includes refining aspects of his swing and stance.

“My body works well, but I didn’t completely grasp how and why,” Melendez added. “Understanding these elements is key for my growth, especially in improving my outfield reads.”

In other news, Gray Kessinger exited the game due to knee discomfort and is likely set for an MRI, as conveyed by Mendoza.
